Mexican Bluebell Still Life

The Mexican Bluebell, a popular sight in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, often catches my eye with its vibrant purple and pink blooms. These delicate flowers are also found in white, though, the white variety is less common in my neighbourhood. The still-life photos of the Mexican Bluebell featured here are among my favourite botanical artworks.

Despite their abundance, these flowers have a very short life, blooming for only a day. Their fleeting beauty means they don’t last long in the studio, requiring quick but precise photography. For this series, I used a macro lens with a shallow depth of field to capture the intricate details of the flower, especially its stem. The Canon 65 mm manual focus lens with its f2.8 aperture was perfect for bringing out the fine details, creating a sense of softness in the petals while highlighting the structure.
