Black and White Feathers
These are photographs of black and white feathers I found on my apartment balcony.
From my inner-city apartment windows, I often watch pigeons – sometimes called city pigeons or feral pigeons – gliding effortlessly by. I find their gracefulness mesmerising.
They land and rest on apartment window ledges, where they perform a funny bird dance. They strut back and forth, turning in circles, and I get giddy just watching them. Another favourite spot for the birds is the air conditioning units, where they hide in tight corners to mate. They build flimsy nests out of a few straws and sticks, then lay small white eggs. Sadly, the pigeons’ hatch rate isn’t great. Out of the six eggs laid over three to four-months, I’ve only seen one chick hatch.
The feathers I’ve collected are from baby birds, soft and incredibly tiny – just beautiful. I often find them on my balcony, and occasionally, there’s a particularly pretty one worth photographing. I assume they’re pigeon feathers, as the nearby crows don’t seem to visit. The black and white feathers were photographed with a macro lens for close-up detail. The Spiritual Meaning of Feathers
After a quick Google search, I came across a Medium article by Amanda APS where she writes about the spiritual meaning of coloured feathers:
“Black and white feathers: These represent protection. It can also mean you’re going through a rocky stage in your life and change is on the way. It may be time to change your behaviour and rid yourself of old habits that are holding you down spiritually, mentally and physically.”
Limited edition, hand-signed feather photographs, each accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, are available in my shop.
