Freedom Reggae Bar, Phuket

I first traveled to Phuket, Thailand, in 2009 and quickly fell in love with the island. We stayed with friends who were fantastic hosts and tour guides, and one of our daily routines was enjoying a sunset beer at the Freedom Reggae Bar. The breathtaking views from the bar made it an instant favourite hangout spot for us.

Perched on top of a hill, the bar offers stunning seascape views, especially during sunset. Bar-style seating along the cliff’s edge provides the perfect vantage point to take in the expansive horizon. If you’re a fan of reggae music, you’ll appreciate the classic reggae tunes playing in the background., adding to the laid-back atmosphere. It’s a venue worth visiting if you enjoy relaxed vibes and scenic views.

For those looking to snack while having a drink, the menu offers the usual deep-fried bar food, as well as healthier options like fresh coconut and various salads. There’s something for everyone here, making it easy to see why this bar is so beloved.

Right next to the bar is a leather goods shop that features hand-crafted belts and handbags. If you’re interested in supporting local craftsmanship, it’s a great place to explore and shop.

In this post, I’ve included some black-and-white portraits of the bar staff, all taken These portraits were taken with their permission. Among them is the owner of the leather shop, easily recognized by his dreadlocks. I also photographed some of the bar’s unique decor, including a portrait of Jimi Hendrix a striking water buffalo skull installation.
