Pareidolia Mushroom Photographs

Foraging for wild mushrooms is always an adventure, though a successful hunt is never guaranteed. Regardless of the outcome, spending time outside, immersed in nature, is time well spent! In this playful set of photos, I attempted to create a pareidolia effect using mushroom imagery. My process is simple: one. I select a photograph, mirror the image, and then see what shapes or faces might emerge.

Unfortunately, this time, the experiment didn’t reveal any faces, creatures, or familiar shapes. While the result didn’t achieve pareidolia, I still like the artwork that emerged. Do you see something I missed? let me know if you can spot a shape that I couldn’t!

Wild Mushroom Identification

I discovered these mushrooms close to my home. After some research, I identified them as the common shaggy parasol mushroom. To capture the intricate details, I photographed mushrooms using a macro lens with 4x magnification. This level of magnification brings out the minutiae of the gills, cap, scales, and stem, which are highlighted in these black-and-white photos. I explore and document urban and natural environments, often focusing on reflections, shadows, and patterns. My camera walks allow me to capture found objects and scenes that tell stories through everyday details. In my journal, I share these explorations and offer a glimpse into my process.
