Baby Bird White Feather Kaleidoscope Imagery

I regularly scan my apartment balcony floor for tiny bird feathers. Feral pigeons have nested around the air conditioning units on the nearby apartment towers, and lately, baby bird feathers have been appearing more often-it must be pigeon breeding season. This collection of photos uses a tiny white baby bird feather to create kaleidoscope-style imagery.

Producing the Kaleidoscope Photos

Creating this kind of work requires patience. The small size and soft, fluffy texture of the feathers make it challenging to frame them up correctly. Even the airflow in my studio needs to be controlled – no fans or air conditioning, as the feathers would easily be blown away.

Using a macro lens, I explore and capture the intricate details, focusing on a narrow area of the feather. The contrast between sharp, in focus details and soft, blurry areas creates an engaging composition. After selecting and downloading the photos, I convert them to black and white, carefully deleting any that don’t work. I then mix and match images, mirroring and repeating patterns in Adobe Lightroom until the concept I’m aiming for comes together.

Feathers are a recurring theme in my work. For more experimental artwork, explore the Pareidolia gallery.
